Custody & Parenting Plan Evaluations
When parents just can't reach agreement on issues such as custody, parenting time, or or any of the other multitude of issues that need to be decided after the end of a relationship, a custody evaluation may be necessary to get a set of recommendations from a mental health professional. The recommendations will hopefully help the parents settle their disagreements. If they still can't reach agreement, the custody evaluator will prepare a report that will help a judge make informed decisions about parenting time, decision-making authority, etc.
Brief Focused Assessments (BFAs)
After custody and other co-parenting issues have been settled, there can still be issues that come up where one co-parent wants a closer look at a specific aspect of parenting. A BFA is a targeted evaluation used to answer specific, narrowly defined questions related to a child's well-being or the family dynamics. It's a timely and cost-effective way to provide information to the court so that a judge can decide issues like parenting time, reunification, or other specific needs of a child.
Parenting Time Evaluations (PTEs)
Parenting time evaluations are very similar to custody evaluations but are generally not as broad in scope. Usually, when a PTE is requested, its purpose is to answer specific question regarding parenting time arrangements. The evaluator gathers information from the parents, the children, and other sources to help the court determine appropriate parenting schedules based on each parent's ability to meet the child's needs, the child's best interests, and each parent's relationship with the child.
